Alexander Thacker, MMus, BMus(hons), took on the appointment of Musical Director of Cheltenham Choral Society in September 2019. Originally from Leicester, he has degrees in both Choral Conducting and Composition from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD). His tutors in Choral Conducting were Sarah Tenant-Flowers and Adrian Partington.

Alex is Musical Director of Llandaff Cathedral Choral Society, having worked previously as Associate Conductor for them. He also conducts the Cavatina Singers, Penarth and has been Director of Music at the Church of St Andrew and St Teilo, Cardiff for eight years. Alex has regularly worked as a deputy conductor for the Cardiff Polyphonic Choir, Cardiff University Chaplaincy Choir, Llysfaen Singers, Canton Chorus and Llandaff Cathedral itself. He worked as Chorus Master for RWCMD’s most recent production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, performed at the Sherman Theatre, Cardiff. Alex has also sung for Opera’rDdraig, Pocket Opera and many local Cathedral Choirs.

In 2011, Alex graduated in composition (RWCMD), winning the Mervyn Burtch Composition Prize. He has had pieces performed in Wales, England and the USA. Strongly committed to Choral Music, Alex has a keen passion for music of today, having performed world premieres of pieces by Welsh Composers, Ben Heneghan and Ian Lawson. A long-term enthusiast for the music of Holst & Vaughan Williams, Alex feels extremely privileged to be working with Cheltenham Choral Society with the town’s strong links to these giants of English music.
